A boring, uninspired letter
Yeah this week was not the most exciting on any front but tradition holds I should nevertheless force myself to type something.
Anyway this week started off with a bang. At the baptism on Saturday (ya know the one where a woman nearly died) it turns out that someone there was sick. We were informed monday night we were exposed to a sick person and told the mission presidents wife. Right after we informed her, we got a message from the sick people saying they got covid tests and everything was negative but good old Hermana Severson (mp wife) told us we still had to quarantine for two days.
This brings us to Tuesday. I sluggishly got up to exercise in the coldest house this side of the Rio Grande knowing we’d be stuck in it the next 48 hours with our only view being a brick wall (literally thats the only view from any of the windows). I’m sorry to sound so pessimistic but this is how I felt in the moment. We did some virtual district council and then we just called people. Literally for hours on end, just number after number. (I’ll include a screenshot of our area book that day) I'm pretty sure it was close to 150 people we called but it felt like more. We had two interesting (one of which was disgusting) contacts. One was when we were eating some delivered pizza, and we got a call from a very distressed non member saying awful things were happening in her house (hinting at demonic type stuff) and saying we needed to come bless it. We couldn't get anything else out of her, but we told her we could pass by her house and give it a blessing on Thursday. We were both kinds nervous cause neither of us had ever experienced anything like us. To make a long story short, we told the Bishop and he told us he had already blessed the house and nothing was wrong and she’s just a very nervous person. We didn't even have the chance to visit her on Thursday cause she was too busy. So no exorcisms for us. The second weird contact we had was the disgusting one where we were texting this random guy and inviting him to hear our message and all that and he randomly sent us a picture of him in nothing but a neon green speedo. I quickly exited out of the chat and saw that he sent a video to go with it. I literally prayed with gratitude I didn't see what the video was and I deleted the chat, blocked him and just flat out deleted the guy from the area book. And all of our 5ish lessons fell too. Anyway that was quarantine Tuesday
Wednesday was Day 2 of quarantine and it wasn't as bad. We decided that instead of freezing our butts off downstairs, we’d come upstairs with the phone and our scriptures and stuff and just do everything from our beds. Every time we’d make a contact on the phone we’d toss it across the room to the other persons bed to make a contact. We had some video call lessons. One with Elizabeth Fuentes again. She’s a little weird as I've mentioned and sometimes hard to teach but it was a good lesson. We had another good lesson with a mom and a daughter too. The only thing is that they don't live in our area so I'm not too sure why we're teaching them.
Thursday was good cause we could finally leave. It felt good just to be outside. Not much happened though. We went to Elizabeths house for a lesson. We brought a guy from the ward so that we could go in. Her house is a bit like a hoarders and has a weird smell. We taught well I thought, but she's so hesitant about baptism its kinda crazy. Later that night we got a call from the mission presidents wife again asking us to come help with a service project the next day.
Friday, we got up and went to this service project. It was at a warehouse where they literally keep all the furniture for the mission houses. Beds, mattresses, desks, bookshelves, fridges (tiny ones), microwaves, plastic drawers for clothes and all that stuff. It was close to our area and there was only 6 missionaries in total And the Mission President and his wife. We were basically just cleaning the dust off the stuff and moving it by the door to put unto trucks. It was good I suppose, one of my MTC buddies was there, but oh man I'm not gonna lie my Mission President is a bit of a tyrant and we were all scared to go near him cause if you were close to him, he’d literally tell you whatever thing you were doing was wrong and get all mad. I pretty much tried to stay out of his eyesight the whole time. We worked for about three and a half hours and by the end the mission presidents wife was all mad at the elders for not wiping the dust off good enough. They're interesting folk I tell ya. After we got back to our area we went to go eat some tacos from the guy were teaching. Im not exaggerating when I say They're the Best tacos I've eaten in México. We ate 8 each and the cow head ones were insanely good. He literally just had a large cow skull laying on the grill. (the next day the taco guy needed some money and offered to give us a cow head for some cash) we taught some lessons with a couple people. We taught two youth and we had one with a crazy old guy on the phone. It's nearly impossible to teach crazy old guys much less on the phone cause they don't know how it works. It was so hard to teach anything so we decided to just cut the lesson short and try to visit him on Monday. I think it could be quite an interesting lesson cause he almost seemed like the basher type, so we'll see.
Saturday was just not great either. It’s cause almost all the lessons fell at the last moment. The thing about having a ton of virtual lessons is that people just do not answer the phone. We were able to go eat with members in their house which doesn't happen too much anymore so that was good. The lady had a son who we were talking to who returned home from his mission about 6 years ago. He had some absolute crazy stories and told us his mission was the weirdest thing to ever happen to him. The two lessons we has weren't the best. One with Elizabeth and one with some girl named Nidia. Both video calls and they're both hard to teach a sometimes I have no idea what to say to them.
Sunday as we were walking to church we ran into the blind recent convert Who always walks to church by himself. His names Jesús and he’s about mid to late 60s I suppose. He's super nice and I was talking to him the whole walk to the church and I helped him take the Sacrament. I’ve befriended men without limbs and now a blind man on my mission. I'm waiting to find some guy without arms or legs to teach now. Later during 2nd hour he got the Aaronic priesthood which was really cool to see. The lesson in priesthood was really interesting. We were talking about all the priesthood ordinances, but when we were discussing baptism, some wise guys brought up the baptism we had last week and said it wasn't spiritual enough which bugged me. For lunch we went and ate lasagna with the Rivera family (they have a baby named Jacob Rivera which is pretty funny) anyway, I feel like I'm burnt out from typing about this week and I'm gonna close.
Bye
PS if you havent seen the talk Elder Holland gave recently, give it a watch. It's literally one of the best talks I've ever seen.
