Meeting One of the Three Nephites?
Hello, I’m here again. This is how my week went.
On Tuesday we had our district council as normal. In hindsight it feels like Tuesday happened ages ago. Not too much happened that day from what I can recall. We helped a lady move furniture from her house though.
Wednesday, was the mission Christmas party. It was pretty cool. The mission has indeed grown since last year. There are a ton of missionaries that I don't know. There were various activities like piñatas, gift exchanges, bingo, a talent show, a devotional and stuff like that. The best part honestly is just talking with the missionaries you haven’t seen in a while. We got home that night just before 9:30, so we didn’t have time to do lessons. (Dang this letter has had a very exciting start hasn’t it?)
Thursday though, we had a cool day. In the morning we had to go to interviews with President. We went all the way to the Melchor Ocampo zone, which is a little far. Melchor Ocampo is one of my old areas so passing by close to there gave some nostalgia. Our Mission President is an extremely kind person by the way. After interviews, we came back to the area. We helped the same lady who we helped on Tuesday move again. It was good. The ladies name is Ruth. She’s very nice. She’s not a member but her mom is. Her moms named Patty. She’s also very nice but right shes in the hospital with a tumor in her brain and other mental problems. Its extremely sad because we often visited that family and they were always very nice to us. Later that night, we were walking to a lesson. We were early to the lesson, so on the way, we decided to stop and buy bread. Literally for half the day we'd wanted a piece of bread (I’ll miss Mexico’s bread) so we saw a bakery and stopped there. We quickly looked over the assortment of breads there, and nothing called our attention, so we turned to leave. But right as we were leaving, some guy who we’d never seen before and will likely not ever see again (in hindsight he must of been one of the 3 Nephites) passed a commented "hey, the bread here is really good." Then he called out to the baker "Hey, Francisco, these guys are looking for you". The guy then walked off. At that point we had no choice but to stop and buy bread. (It ended up being pretty good). We paid for the bread, and as the baker Francisco went to go get change. I quickly entertained the thought of contacting the guy. There have been many moments on my mission where I’ve ignored these thoughts and just kept walking, but I thought about a quote (that after the fact I remembered that it comes from an Elder Holland talk) that goes like this:
“As President Boyd K. Packer taught this morning, Satan cannot directly take a life. That is one of many things he cannot do. But apparently his effort to stop the work will be reasonably well served if he can just bind the tongue of the faithful.”
This time, I decided not to let satan 'bind my tongue'. When the baker got back, we started talking to him. He was extremely nice and we taught him a few gospel principles. I’m not sure if we gave him a Book of Mormon or not, but he accepted our invitation for us to come back and talk more with him, so today after P-day, were gonna go visit him. It was a really cool experience. It was also crazy that we weren't even gonna buy bread at that place had that guy not passed and told us the bread was good and then literally told the baker we were looking for him. I suppose the guy didn't know how right he was.
Friday, we had the chance to go to the Temple with the ward. There was a couple non members there, so while the ward was in the temple, me and my companion gave a tour of the visitors center. There was a lady there named Carmina, she had a lot of questions and she really liked going to the Temple, so that was cool. We were there for quite a while. When we got back to the church, the ward had gotten some Taqueros to come and they were making tacos de al pastor. The best thing was that we could eat as much as we wanted. I don’t know how many I ate, but it wasn't few. My companion literally downed 20. It was insane.
Saturday was the 24th. In the morning we helped clean the church and the members brought us tamales. During the lunch we ate some meat, and some apple salad (super good). After we visited another family and they gave us food as well. At night we ate dinner with another family. We ended up eating 4 times that day, but the members are nice.
Sunday (Christmas) is a pretty dang quiet day here. At church an area 70 came. He and his wife were extremely nice. I saw him in the hallway and said "hola, hermano" thinking he was just a random member, it turned out he was elder (I forgot his name) and he was really nice. We ate with the Stake President and his family, visited another less active family, called my own family, and we visited some investigators that night. That was basically the week. It was a good one. Anyways bye!
